17th - Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley - "The Importance of the US Role in International Affairs"
Mrs. Abercrombie-Winstanley was the US Ambassador to Malta from May, 2012-January, 2016. Mrs. Abercrombie-Winstanley was a peace corps volunteer in Oman before joining the US Foreign Service in 1985. She served in the embassies in Iraq, Indonesia, and Egypt. She returned to the US and became Special Assistant for Middle Eastern and African Affairs for Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger. She then moved to the US Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel for 3 years. After returning stateside for a few years, Mrs. Abercrombie-Winstanley served as Consul General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where she survived an al-Qaeda attack on the consulate on December 6, 2004. She was cited for "acts of courage" during the attack. She spent the next several years working at the Foreign Service Institute and the near Eastern Affairs Bureau. From 2008-2012 she was Deputy Coordinator for Counterterrorism before being appointed Ambassador to Malta. She was born and raised in Cleveland Heights, earned a B.A. from George Washington University and a Master's degree in International relations from Johns Hopkins University. Mrs. Abercrombie-Winstanley is married and has two adult children.
24th - Christopher Wilkins - "Surround Sound: Orchestras and Community"
Mr. Wilkins has been the Akron Symphony Music Director and Conductor since 2006. The orchestra's programming reflects his strong interest in community-oriented projects. He has developed partnerships with many artists and organizations based in Northeast Ohio and has produced many significant collaborative projects. These include fully-staged performances of Porgy and Bess, The Rite of Spring, Titanic, South Pacific, A Midsummer's Night's Dream, and Carmina Burana. The orchestra's community initiatives have been awarded a major grant from the Knight Foundation. Mr Wilkins also serves as Music Director of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, a summer orchestra performing weekly throughout the neighborhoods of Boston. He has been a guest conductor with many of the leading orchestras of the United States and with some international ones. Earlier in his career he was the assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra, assisting Christoph von Dohnanyi. Mr. Wilkins earned his B.A, from Harvard College and his Master of Music degree from Yale University, where he studied with Otto-Werner Mueller. As an oboist, he performed with many ensembles in the Boston area.
1st - Kevin E. Martin - "Public Media's Paradigm Shift"
Mr. Martin has been the President and CEO of Ideastream since 2017. His vision for growth includes larger audiences across all platforms and more individual, community, and corporate engagement and support. Before moving to Cleveland, Mr. Martin was the SVP and COO of KQED, the public media organization serving the San Francisco Bay area. Before leading operations at KQED, Mr Martin spent 7 years as the VP of Station Grants and Television Station Initiatives at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting where he oversaw the management and disbursement of $280 million in formula grants to public TV and radio stations. Earlier in his career, Mr. Martin ran public broadcasting entities in the Twin Cities and in North Texas. Mr. Martin received his B. Sc. from Purdue University and his Master's degree in Public Administration from American University.
